The club was established in 1920 by Jack Johnson, a heavyweight boxing champion. Owney Madden, a prominent English gangster and bootlegger assumed control of the club in 1923 and changed the name "The Cotton Club."
At first, blacks could not patronize the club, but it featured many of the most famous entertainers of the time including musicians Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford, Chick Webb, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Fats Waller; vocalists Adelaide Hall, Ethel Waters, Cab Calloway, Bessie Smith, Aida Ward, Avon Long, the Dandridge Sisters, the Will Vodery Choir, Nina Mae McKinney, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne and dancers Katherine Dunham, Bill Robinson, The Nicholas Brothers, Charles 'Honi' Coles, Leonard Reed, Stepin Fetchit, and Earl Snakehips Tucker.
In 1936, when a race riot broke out in Harlem The Cotton Club was closed temporarily and then reopened at a new location at Broadway and 48th Street. The club's owners believed the Cotton Club would succeed in the new location.
However, the Cotton Club had a long history of discriminatory policies and segregation practices. Carl Van Vechten, a photographer who frequented the Cotton Club, pledged to boycott the club until its discriminatory policies were rescinded.
The Cotton Club was moved to new premises after a contract was signed. Pistoia Discoteche Club allowed for the club's policy of segregation to be adjusted and made it more accessible to black audiences. The Cotton Club featured some of the most popular entertainers of the day and was a meeting place for young black people in New York City.
The Cotton Club was famous for its dance revues and musical shows comedy, variety acts, comedy as well as house bands. Many of the performers began their careers in the Cotton Club's jazz concerts.
